What is a US visa photo?

A US visa photo is the official passport-style photograph required when applying for any nonimmigrant or immigrant visa to the United States. Whether you're applying for a B1/B2 tourist visa, F1 student visa, H1B work visa, J1 exchange visa, K1 fiancé visa, or a Diversity Visa Lottery entry, the US Department of State requires the same standardized 2×2 inch photo format.

The US visa photo is a biometric document. Consular officers and automated systems use it to verify your identity throughout the visa processing and entry at US ports of entry. That's why the rules are strict — and why rejection delays your entire application by weeks.

File sizeUnder 240 KB
ColorFull color, sRGB color space
CompressionHigh quality JPEG, no heavy compression artifacts
iPhone users: convert HEIC to JPEG before upload

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. The DS-160 portal rejects HEIC files even if you rename them to .jpg — the headers are different. Convert properly using a tool like PassportPrints that outputs a true JPEG, or change your iPhone's camera setting to "Most Compatible" under Settings → Camera → Formats.

Which visas require this photo format?

All US visa categories use the same 2×2 inch photo specification. The list below covers every common visa type our tool supports:

Nonimmigrant visas (temporary stays, DS-160)

Immigrant visas (permanent residency, DS-260)

US visa photo vs. US passport photo — what's different?

Many applicants assume visa and passport photos are interchangeable. Physically they are, but digitally they aren't.

Physical size2 × 2 inches2 × 2 inches
BackgroundWhite/off-whiteWhite/off-white
Digital formats acceptedJPEG, PNG, HEIC, HEIFJPEG only

The 240 KB cap is the biggest technical gotcha. A high-quality 1200×1200 JPEG from a phone camera is often 500 KB to 2 MB — well over the limit. You have to compress it carefully without losing so much quality that the photo fails biometric checks. Our tool handles this automatically.

The 2026 AI editing ban — what US visa applicants need to know

On January 1, 2026, the US Department of State activated zero-tolerance enforcement on digitally manipulated photos. This applies to both passport and visa applications. The official guidance states: "Do not alter your photo using computer software, phone applications or filters, or AI."

Prohibited modifications include:

Allowed formatting includes:

Using PassportPrints for a US visa photo

Our tool does technical formatting (cropping, resizing, compressing) which is fully allowed. For US visa photos specifically, skip the optional "Remove Background" button — take your photo against a plain white wall instead. That way your photo contains zero AI modifications and passes 2026 State Department rules.

How to take a compliant US visa photo at home

Step 1 — Set up your background

Find a plain white wall. Stand 3–4 feet in front of it to avoid your own shadow. If you don't have a white wall, hang a plain white bedsheet flat against the wall. Avoid cream, light gray, or beige — they photograph darker than they look.

Step 2 — Get the lighting right

Face a window during daytime. Natural diffused light from the front produces the most even, shadow-free result. Overhead light creates shadows under your eyes — avoid it. If you can't use natural light, position two lamps symmetrically at face height, about 4 feet away.

Step 3 — Take the photo properly

Don't take a selfie. Selfie distance distorts your face (wide-angle effect). Have someone take the photo from 4–5 feet away, with the camera at your eye level. Use 2× zoom on a phone camera to reduce lens distortion. Keep a neutral expression with eyes open.

Step 4 — Check compliance

Remove glasses. Pull hair out of your face. Wear normal clothing that isn't white. No hats unless religious. Mouth closed, looking straight at the camera.

Step 5 — Upload and format

Open our photo tool, select United States as the country, upload your photo, and adjust the crop frame so your head falls within the 50–69% height range. Skip the "Remove Background" button. Download — the output will be a compliant 2×2 inch JPEG ready for DS-160.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a US visa photo?

US visa photos must be exactly 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm). The digital version for DS-160 and DS-260 uploads must be square, between 600×600 and 1200×1200 pixels, in JPEG format, and under 240 KB file size.

Is a US visa photo the same as a US passport photo?

The physical size is the same — 2×2 inches with identical head positioning rules. The main difference is that US visa photos (for DS-160/DS-260) have stricter digital file requirements: maximum 240 KB file size and JPEG format only. US passport renewal online accepts JPEG, PNG, HEIC, and HEIF up to 10 MB.

What visa types does this tool work for?

This tool creates compliant photos for all US visa applications including B1/B2 tourist visas, F1 student visas, H1B work visas, J1 exchange visas, L1 intracompany transfers, K1 fiancé visas, and immigrant visas (DS-260) including family-based green cards and Diversity Visa Lottery entries.

Can I wear glasses in a US visa photo?

No. Glasses have been prohibited in US visa photos since November 2016. This includes prescription glasses, reading glasses, sunglasses, and tinted lenses. The only exception is a documented medical condition that prevents glasses removal, which requires a signed medical statement.

How recent must my visa photo be?

US visa photos must be taken within the last 6 months. If you are renewing a visa, you cannot reuse the photo from your previous visa — a new photo is required.

Does this tool meet 2026 AI editing restrictions?

Yes, if you use the tool for cropping and sizing only. PassportPrints performs technical formatting (cropping to 2×2 inches, sizing, file conversion) which is permitted under 2026 State Department rules. The optional AI background removal feature should be skipped for US visa applications since AI-altered photos are prohibited as of January 1, 2026.

What if my photo is rejected at the consulate?

If the DS-160 system accepts your photo but a consular officer rejects it at the interview, they will typically ask you to provide a new printed photo on the spot. Most US embassies and consulates have photo services nearby. Rejection at the interview delays your visa but doesn't require re-filing — make sure to bring 2–4 backup printed copies of your photo to any interview.

Do I need a printed photo for the interview?

Some embassies require a printed 2×2 inch photo at the interview even though you already uploaded digitally. Our tool outputs a print-ready 4×6 sheet with multiple photos — print at any drugstore for about $0.39 and cut to size.
